The third stage has Golem as the mini-boss in both versions of the game, though they have different sprites and fight a bit differently. The main boss is Medusa in the U.S. game while she is known as Gorgon in the Japanese game. Medusa IS a gorgon so they are pretty much the same with a naming difference and alternate facial portraits. If you look at the Japanese action image, there is an orb around Jajamaru. The orb reflects attacks back at Gorgon on its own while you must reflect attacks back with a mirror in the U.S. game. In the Japanese game, Gorgon can turn you to stone which will instantly kill your hero, regardless of how much life you have. Even though this is extremely easy to avoid (simply activate your special weapon with the select button at the start of battle), this was removed from the U.S. game. Even if you get hit with the attack that turns you to stone in the U.S. game, it won't do anything except take damage. In the U.S. game, she shoots circular rings. In the Japanese game, she shoots strange symbols at you. If you somehow die against Medusa in the U.S. game, Maru can still turn to stone when he is defeated.

The images below show ONLY the fourth stage mini-boss of both versions...The Sphinx. You don't fight this boss at all. When you get to the end of the first part of the level, you must answer The Sphinx's riddle. In the U.S. game, The Sphinx only asks you one question, regardless of how many times you get it wrong. In the Japanese game, The Sphinx asks you three different questions randomly. If you get the question right the first time, you do not have to answer any more questions.

This is the fourth stage boss. In the U.S. game, you are taken to fight a creature named Isis. In the Japanese game, you will fight a demon whose name translates into "Pazusu". I often wonder if the name "Pazusu" is actually supposed to be "Pazuzu". Maybe it was meant to be that way...maybe not. Anyway, Pazusu and Isis fight differently from each other.
